  • The transmission of animal viruses between different species has been closely linked to the emergence of new viruses in humans. For example, influenza A viruses (IAVs) primarily reside in aquatic birds, and their occasional spillover to other hosts can result in the establishment of IAV in new hosts, including humans.

  • At the end of 2019, a novel coronavirus, named SARS-CoV-2, was initially identified in China and quickly spread across the globe, resulting in over six million fatalities. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that the virus originated in bat populations, with speculation that an intermediate host, such as pangolins, may have played a role in facilitating its adaptation to humans.

  • Therefore, it is crucial to understand 1) how and when cross-species transmissions can occur, as well as 2) the factors that facilitate stable transmission within a new host. By investigating these key aspects, we can better mitigate the impact of future pandemics caused by zoonotic diseases.
